Boomerang-shaped galaxy discovered

Astronomers have detected a strange, boomerang-shaped galaxy that reveals new details about the gas "filaments" connecting massive galaxy clusters. In this diagram, galaxies in a giant cluster are seen as dots. The hot gas filling the cluster and filament is shown in purple. The odd, bent galaxy is shown in the inset. Physicists replicate a supernova in laboratory

This composite image of the Tycho supernova remnant combines infrared and X-ray observations obtained with NASA's Spitzer and Chandra space observatories, respectively, and the Calar Alto observatory, Spain. It shows the scene more than four centuries after the brilliant star explosion witnessed by Tycho Brahe and other astronomers of that era. What does it take to replicate a supernova in a laboratory? A test tube, water, glycerol and a miniature mushroom cloud, according to work done by university physicists.  Sure, it’s a tabletop analogue of the process, but it could still tell scientists a great deal about how supernovae form — particularly that initial explosion.
